Music Streaming Boosting Recording Industry’s Revenue

Subscription based music streaming services like PAndora, Rhapsody or Spotify have generated $241 Mio. in revenues in 2011 (up 13.5% from 2010) in the USA including a rise in paying customers by 18%. Royalties from music streaming rose by 17%.

Also in 2011 sales of downloaded albums hit 100 Mio. for the first time, giving weight to the argument that subscription-based music streaming is NOT harming album sales.

The artists and especially the independent artist however feel left behind as streaming services pay them poorly in comparison to physical sales and downloads.
